As the director of a university child care center, my days consisted of the usual administrative tasks: meetings, intervening when issues arose between and among staff members, caring for children who were sick, often making lunch, occasionally cleaning the kitchen because of a staffing shortage, and talking with families who needed child care. Meeting with families for whom we were able to offer child care was the most rewarding part of the job. I was proud of the center and the changes I had made in the two years I had been directing and I looked forward to showing it off to families. One of the changes I made immediately after becoming the director was altering the enrollment form to be inclusive of families with two moms or two dads. The form I inherited requested the mother's name and the father's name; I changed it to two lines that requested the name(s) of the parent(s)/guardian(s). I believed this to be a subtle but significant change that would help to welcome parents who were gay or lesbian. Another, more visible change involved the phrase "Celebrate Diversity and Teach Peace," which was attached to every document I developed for the center, and on artwork displayed in the classrooms, office, and hallway.
